Know Your Neighbour: White Dwarf Researchers in the UK
Stellar1
In recent years, a number of institutions in the UK have expanded or initiated research on white dwarf stars. There have been limited opportunities for new and established members of the community to meet in the past few years, and we therefore aim for this meeting to bring together the UK white dwarf community for presenting, networking, and fostering collaborations. We plan for this meeting to encompass two primary focuses: (i) allow Early Career Researchers (ECRs) priority on talks to disseminate their research among their national peers, in many cases for the first time, and (ii) for senior members of UK institutions with ongoing white dwarf research to give an introductory talk on the institution's members and research topics. Our goals for this event are the presentation of work made by ECRs in the white dwarf community, and to foster new and old collaborations alike between our national colleagues. Based on the participation and feedback obtained from the sessions, we will gauge whether there is interest for there to be an annual UK white dwarf meeting at NAM. While there is an international white dwarf conference held every two years, it is often based in the Americas which can limit the participation of Early Career Scientists. We envision a yearly, national-based meeting such as that proposed in order to allow Early Career Scientists working in the field of white dwarf research to obtain additional opportunities to present their research.
