Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA)

🌍 Website: http://almaobservatory.org/

The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) is the worlds largest interferometric telescope. ALMA is being used to answer questions fundamental questions in modern astronomy, with observations ranging from galaxies in the high redshift Universe all the way to present day star formation, exoplanets and evolved stars within our own Galaxy and, even closer to home objects, in our own Solar system. Comprising 66 antennas situated 5000m above sea level in the Atacama desert, ALMA observes from at 30-950GHz (0.32-9.5mm) using baselines up to 16km allowing an unprecedented view of the 'cool' Universe.

The UK ALMA Regional Centre Node, a STFC-funded facility hosted at Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, provides support for those in the astronomical community wishing to use the ALMA telescope. The UK ARC Node provides ALMA users with services covering proposal preparation and simulations to observation preparation, data reduction and working with the ALMA data archive. Our staff and facilities are available to ensure that the UK astronomical community can achieve world leading science using the ALMA telescope.
